Whewell’s Gazette

Your weekly digest of all the best of

Internet history of science, technology and medicine

Editor in Chief: The Ghost of William Whewell

Cornelis Bloemaert

Year 3, Volume #52

Monday 14 July 2017

EDITORIAL:

We have the final edition of the third year of Whewell’s Gazette the weekly #histSTM links list brining you all of the histories of science, technology and medicine that we could dig up in the furthest reaches of the Internet.

There is a stupid saying in German that everything has an end and only the sausage has two. It is with a feeling of sadness but also one of relief that I am announcing that this is not just the final edition of year three of Whewell’s Gazette but the final edition; Whewell’s Gazette is no more.

I am sad because Whewell’s Gazette is one hundred per cent my baby. I conceived it, I birthed it, I nurtured it and I have watched it grow and mature over one hundred and fifty six information packed issues; now I have taken the decision to kill it off.

I actually took this decision many months ago but decided then to complete three full years before I pulled the plug and let my baby sink into cyber oblivion. Producing Whewell’s Gazette has come to consume much, in fact too much, of my life in terms of both time and effort and that is why I have a feeling of relief in letting it go.

The personal satisfaction that I have garnered through producing this gazette has for a long time not been enough to compensate for the number of unpaid hours that I have devoted to its production every week. I’m not even sure that if those hours had been adequately remunerated that I would have found enough satisfaction to keep going; I actually seriously doubt it.

Editing Whewell’s Gazette for three years has been a learning process. I have discovered just how much #histSTM material is being put out every week on the Internet and I’m sure there is even more that I didn’t succeed in gathering up in my sweeps of cyberspace. The Internet #histSTM community is healthy and productive and it is to be hoped that it will long remain so. On a personal trivial level my weekly endeavours have improved both my highly deficient typing and spelling skills and that at least is something that I will take with me into my own personal #histSTM future.

For the foreseeable future I shall continue to write my Renaissance Mathematicus blog, which does give me the personal satisfaction that I miss here. Over the last three years I have used my Twitter stream to collect the links that I have then published here and I intend to continue doing so. This means that if you follow me on Twitter (@rmathematicus) you can find all of this links that would have appeared here if I had continued to collate them for Whewell’s Gazette. You will of course have to filter the #histSTM tweets and retweets out from the jazz and jam rock, political and humorous tweets and retweets that I also send into cyberspace daily.

When I decided to end Whewell’s Gazette I also decided not to produce any form of special final edition but to leave the same mundane way as I started with just the regular links list, so to misuse T S Elliot’s infamous line Whewell’s Gazette ends not with a bang but a whimper.

Quotes of the week:

“Philip Melanchthon, Luther’s right-hand man and perhaps the Reformation’s most effective spokesman, was a revolutionary educational reformer, father of one of the movement’s many lasting legacies. Without knowledge of history, he wrote, we are condemned to perpetual childhood, endless darkness, collective blindness. There are none so blind as those who will not look at history, and it is time to open our eyes to the past, in order to face the future” – Christopher Kissane
