Year 3, Volume #44

Monday 19 June 2017

EDITORIAL:

The middle of the solar year is rapidly approaching and Whewell’s Gazette the weekly #histSTM links list steams on towards the end of its third publication year with the latest edition bringing you all of the histories of science, technology and medicine that flowed in our direction out of the Internet over the last seven days.

Valentina Tereshkova

On 16 June 1963 Valentina Tereshkova became the first women in space when she orbited the earth 48 times over three days in the Vostok 6 space capsule. Her flight did not serve any scientific or technical purpose but was merely planned as a publicity coup to put one over on the US, as was much of the activity in the Russian space programme.

“Every time I see it I touch it. It is my best and most beautiful friend” – Valentina Tereshkova on Vostok 6

The plan worked out totally. Tereshkova became an instant celebrity upon her save return to earth and was paraded in public by the Russian government on numerous occasions over the following decades.

Valentina Tereshkova

Her space flight might be regarded as ‘a giant leap for womenkind’, as the Forbes article title puts it, however it would be twenty years before other women would follow her into space; first Svetlana Yevgenyevna Savitskaya in Soyuz T-7 for the Russians in 1982 and the Sally Ride on the Challenger as the first American woman one year later.

Although Valentina Tereshkova has come to be regarded, with justification, as a feminist icon, we still have a situation that women only form a small minority of all those who have flown in space. This as in so many other fields of human endeavour needs to change.
